Response to Article: Why Young Adults Use Myspace and Facebook Gratification

I found this article to be interesting. I even learned some new things about social networking sites that I was unaware of before. A new word was introduced to me tonight. I had never heard of the word "scene kids". These are people that build up there profile to appear as being more popular. They construct there online identity to be somewhat of another person that they really are. I found this avenue to be intriguing to me. Obviously, they are using the social network sites in order to feel better about themselves. They feel gratification in doing so.
This is in contrast to how I use these sites. I tend to use them to broadcast information. Broadcatsing information to a whole mass of people. This allows me to tell people either within my hometown or across the country.
One thing that is apparent here since I've contrasted two different groups of people here is that everyone finds their gratification on the SNS in a different way. One size does not fit all!

  1. I like that about these social networks that you can be a scene kid and make your self feel better or you can use it for broadcasting information. I personally use social networks to keep in touch with people. There are few limitations in what social identity you can create and I think it is important for people to have an outlet to be creative. It kind of reminds me of people who dress up for conventions, Halloween, costume parties etc... They are still creating a character but it seems to be more socially acceptable, then creating a "character" online. Also side note I love dressing up for Halloween!

  2. This article was a little interesting. I found the whole "Scene kids" was a little sad. From my understanding its when a person makes a fake page with fake pictures so that people will talk to them. Personally that would not make me feel better about myself. I know people who do this so that they can spy on their boyfriends or people they don't like. I know this girl who created a fake page and got her boyfriend to add her under her fake Facebook page and after she found out her was also in another relationship with another girl they broke up.

  3. Hi! Good job with your post. I also had never heard of the term "scene kids" but they are definitly out there. Facebook can be seen as a popularity contest and theses people will do anything to get more friends on their list. In a way maybe we are all like this. We are all selective with what we post on facebook. WE want only flattering pictures of ourselves to be seen by the public, maybe with the hope of them seeing us as desireable or cool. You made some great points and I agree with what you said.

  4. As social networking sites have developed over the past few years, "Scene Kid" has seemed to take on a new meaning. While it could once have been used to describe kids with skater haircuts and tight pants, it now seems to be branching out to be anyone who uses a Social Networking Site to feel good about themselves. The criteria is created by those in the "elite." The pretty. The popular. Blah Blah Blah. Those people in particular are projecting their own insecurities onto others in an attempt to make themselves feel better, or at least make it so they don't get to the point where they have to question their own sense of self.

  5. I really appreciate that SNS can be used in so many different ways. I think that's one of the really special things about it, partly because of the wide variety of people that are attracted for those different reasons. I personally use it mostly for keeping in touch with people who I don't get to see too often as well as catching up with people from previous stages of my life. I also like getting information from various pages that I've "liked" (such as businesses or other companies), especially notifications about cool deals they are offering or information about special events that are happening in the area.
