Response to Article: The PC is dying, but very, very slowly

I came across this interesting article. The article claims that PC sales are slowing down in certain parts of the world. For example, sales of lap tops and Ipads are up in this country while PC sales are down. However, this appears to be a regional issue. PC sales are way up in China and India. They can't seem to get enough of them. It is also noted that Latin American sales of PC's is in the double digits.
Now, this is what I think, from my perspective. I don't own a lap top or an Ipad since I prefer to sit comfortably in an office area to work on my computer. Of course, this is not how everyone operates. Some people prefer to have the independance of using a lap top or ipad in order to do their business. It will take a revolutionary system to be introduced in order for me to change from my PC to something else.
I'm sure that most people feel the same way. This is the reason why I think PC's will be around for a while longer. We must take into account the reasons why the PC may have sluggish sales in the U.S. One reason comes to mind would be the fact that the United States in in depression mode. People just don't have the money to buy much of anything now days.

  1. I own a lap top because I wanted something that I could take with me to school and when I travel. I should have gotten a notebook because those are much lighter and cheaper in price. Before I bought my computer I had to make the choice between desk top or lap top. I still want a desk top because they last WAY longer in terms of years because you can keep buying different parts to rebuild it. My boyfriend has had his desk top for 5+ years and has spent maybe what I paid for my lap top probably less. Also this is my second lap top, my first one was used which added to its demise. If lap tops are unappealing because of their small screen I rarely use it I bought a separate keyboard, mouse, and 20' screen so there are ways around it ;)

  2. I can definitely see how PC's verses Mac could be a regional thing. I just had a discussion with my roommate who mentioned that Mac covers only ~7% of the computer market and I was shocked. This area (I live in Palo Alto) is saturated with Mac Products, but this isn't the case worldwide. I made the switch from PC to Mac in 2007 and I soon realized that I knew nothing about the product I'd just purchased, to be honest, I still don't use my MacBook to it's full capabilities, but I find, if I can't do something with my Mac... it's my fault and not the Mac's. Mac's are super user friendly and if you take the time to relearn a few things, you'll not regret it. I guess it just depends on if you're willing to go through a period of time relearning a few things.

  3. I think we as Americans are more into technology. We love having the new shiny things, the latest computers and gadgets. I think PC sales over here are lower because Apple is native to this area. I had a PC for a majority of my life, up until this past April. It took me about a year and half to finally make the switch from PC to Mac, and I have to say, I love it. But there are things that I miss that come with PCs. Macs are definitely more aesthetically pleasing and 'easier' to use, but PCs are universal. I don't think that PCs will ever fade out. If anything, their competition with Apple is just pushing them to improve!

  4. Not going to lie, I bought a laptop because it was easy to bring everywhere and I could be in different rooms in the house if I wanted to be. That was the seller for me, and the fact that I love MACs, so if it was between a PC and a MAC laptop, I was definitely going for my MAC laptop. I do have to say though, sometimes I go into my parents room and use their PC. I like that their is a designated spot for it and a nice big comfy chair. I also think that PCs will never die out completely, but I can definitely see how not a lot of people are buying them anymore.
