Response to Article: Blogging: Self Presentaion and Privacy

This article focused on privacy issues. It is based on a research project of poled participants on what they deemed is private. There are types of privacy according to the author 1) Informational Privacy 2) Accessibility Privacy and 3) Expressive Privacy.
Informational privacy deals with how a person controls their information. Accessibility privacy is how others find out information such as wire taps etc and finally, Expressive privacy is how a person chooses to interact with others. Therefore, letting some informaiton available.
The reading gave many examples of what was proper or improper etiquette in regards to reflection of social identity on a blog. As we all now, some people feel free to express their opinions regarding their personal life and so forth in public. I have always felt that it is not good to place dirty laundry out there for those to view. Therefore, I feel that information privacy issues are the most important and most controlable that a person has when they are blogging. Keeping a guard up is a good thing at times.

  1. I think that you did a good job of highlighting many of the main ideas in the article. I agree with you that people should keep their guard up in regards to information that they share online because you never know who is looking. I also agree with you that it is not the best idea to air your dirty laundry on the Internet for the world to see—something’s should remain private. I did like that many participants in the study were concerned about protecting their loved ones from being exposed. Which is something that I think many blogger's should think about before including a loved one in their blog, just because they want to discuss their life doesn’t mean that the other person would want to be included in that.

  2. Great summary of the article; it was an interesting study as the main age group was 19-34 year olds, it would be interesting to see how younger respondents would answer regarding blogging etiquette/what should and should not be said online. The three kinds of privacy were interesting as I had not thought of expressive privacy before reading this. I always thought of privacy as what a person decides to let the world know about them and also breaching privacy such as wiretapping. Privacy is definitely a topic that all internet users should understand the importance of. Great post - you summed up the article as well as clarifying the three types of privacy discussed. Good work!

  3. I feel this is an important article and wish it was read earlier in the semester because our class is so heavily centered about blogging. I'm a first time blogger and I think I have some decent netiquette but it always helps to read articles especially about privacy. I know we had an article posted earlier called Netiquette that our teacher recommended we read but I still think it needs to be stressed in another format. Wow the word netiquette was in my dictionary already! Overall I think this article was interesting the only problem I had with it was that the sample size they used was really limited and not very diverse.

  4. Great job with your article summary! I thought this was a great article. In a world where information can be found so easily,I feel that people advertise their personal information too freely. People value their privacy, especially with personal information that could have a negative effect on their lives if someone was to find that information. However, some people, especially young people, dont realize that the stuff you put on the Internet will be there forever. Its pretty scary. Anyways, good job!
