Response to:Collective Behavior in You Tube: A Case Study of "Bus Uncle" Online Videos

I have never viewed or even heard of the "Bus Uncle" video prior to the reading of "Bus Uncle". The results of the research showed that it was quite popular for a time.
The aspect that I thought was interesting about the article was how it had been mashed up. I've never heard this term before but I believe I've come across some of the videos that have been mashed up. The videos that come to mind were in regards to "Pirates of the Carribean". I had done a search for Captain Jack Sparrow. I had intended on locating original footage. Unfortunately, all the videos that I came across were choped up. They had music that was not in the film interjected into them or the scenes were inconsitant. I thought it was really annoying.
Youtube is a "broadcast" yourself medium. I've never uploaded any videos before. However, lots of people put up goofy stuff. I'm not sure if they want to get noticed or if they have way to much time on their hands.

  1. Just like you I did not see the video “Bus Uncle” discussed in the article “Collective behavior in YouTube: A case study of “bus uncle” online videos. Like the article said it was a viral video which means it did get thousands of hits in a short amount of time. Mashed up videos on YouTube are pretty choppy videos. They are pretty popular because usually fans looked for videos from their favorite movie or artist. A lot of videos I have seen on youtube can be annoying because it is easy to sign up for an account and post videos of goofy stuff.

  2. What funny, is that I have never heard of the "Bus Uncle" story until now. I don't really find some of the rude, disrespectful, and violent videos that most like to watch on YouTube. I feel there needs to be a degree of ethics considered when posting videos to YouTube. I agree with the article that the media is influencing our behavior. I agree with you that some people truly have way too much time on their hands. You seemed to have understood the article well, and I enjoyed reading your blog. Thank you for posting and great work.

  3. Good job with your post! I too have never posted a video on you tube, but I do think its a great place for people to get their face out their- especially if you are showing how good you are at singing or have another special talent. I am familiar with the term viral and, its funny because the only videos I have seen or taken the time to search for have been viral. I sometimes wonder how people come across these bizaree videos. I can understant why mashups would be a popualr video. If I like johnny depp, i would be totally interested in seeing clips from all of his movies. Anyways, great post!
